High school students express academic needs to Community Cabinet

graduation capColton, Grand Terrace and Bloomington community members today asked a group of high school students how parents, businesses, non-profit organizations and local government could best support the academic and career success of every student. The dialogue occurred at the monthly meeting of the Colton Joint Unified School District’s Community Cabinet.

Colton Joint and San Bernardino City unified school districts are piloting the first Community Cabinets for the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools’ Alliance for Education, which seeks to foster partnerships amongst all community sectors to support the education system.

The high school students advocated for adult and peer mentors, college and career resources and counseling, and job internship programs. And, despite the economy’s negative impact on local job opportunities, the students remained optimistic about their future.

One of the students thanked the community members in attendance by saying he knew his parents and teachers cared about him, but he didn’t know until this meeting of the Community Cabinet that his community cared about him as well.

In December, the Colton Community Cabinet will meet to potentially adjust proposed community priorities for supporting the success of every child from cradle to career based upon the input provided by teachers and principals in October and students in November.
