Employee Scholarship

Funding has been allocated to provide scholarships designed to pay student tuition (not to include books, travel or other expenses) for employees who are working to earn a clinical or non-clinical Certificate, Associate or Bachelor’s degree, or a non-clinical Master’s or Doctorate degree. This opportunity is expressly designed to promote the development of a strong, stable and diverse workforce within DBH.

The objective of this scholarship program is to help current DBH employees continue their educations and advance their careers. Awardees will be selected prior to class attendance, and awards will be paid upon the completion of class with proof of a satisfactory grade. All awards are subject to the availability of funding.

The maximum scholarship award is up to $5,000.00 per year for bachelors and graduate students and up to $1,000.00 per year for certificates or associate degrees.

Mental Health Loan Assumption Program (MHLAP)

MHLAP was created by the Mental Health Services Act (Act), passed by California voters in November 2004. The Act provided funding to develop a loan forgiveness program in order to retain qualified professionals working within the Public Mental Health System (PMHS). Through the Workforce Education and Training component of the Act, approximately $10 million is allocated yearly to loan assumption awards. An award recipient may receive up to $10,000 to repay educational loans in exchange for a 12-month service obligation in a hard-to-fill or retain position within the County PMHS.

Licensed Mental Health Service Provider Education Program (LMHSPEP)

An awardee may receive up to $15,000 to repay educational loans over a 24-month period in exchange for a 24-month commit-ment to practicing and providing direct care in a publicly funded or public mental health facility, a non-profit mental health facility, or a mental health professions shortage area.

National Health Services Corps (NHSC)

The NHSC Loan Repayment Program is open to licensed primary care medical, and mental and behavioral health providers who are employed at an NHSC-approved site. Awardees may receive up to $50,000 in exchange for two-years of full-time service if they practice at an NHSC-approved site with a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) score of 14 and above, or up to $30,000 in exchange for two-years of full-time service if they practice at an NHSC-approved site with a HPSA of 13 and below.

License Exam Prep Program (LEPP)

Behavioral Health and contract agency staff are reimbursed for materials or study packages they purchased after meeting the program criteria to help them become licensed clinical therapists. Participants may purchase exam materials or study packages from any vendor they choose. However, participants can only be reimbursed for an aggregate total of up to $1,000. Also, participants can only be reimbursed for one set of exam materials or package per exam.

Participants will be reimbursed for their first exam material or study package purchase when they pass the first exam. They will be reimbursed for their second exam material or study package purchase when they become licensed.
