First infant death from Pertussis (whooping cough) confirmed (7/17/2018)

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, has claimed the life of a San Bernardino County infant less than six months of age. This is the first confirmed death from the disease in California since 2016. View the news release.

Pet safety during the Fourth of July begins now (6/28/2018)

The Fourth of July holiday is nearly here, but the fireworks have already begun in neighborhoods throughout San Bernardino County. Therefore, San Bernardino County Animal Care and Control (ACC) advises that pet owners begin preparing now to help keep their pets safer. Second annual ‘Home Run for Health’ planned for May 3 (4/16/2018)

Residents and baseball fans throughout the Inland Empire are invited to hit a “Home Run for Health” May 3 when the Inland Empire 66ers face-off against the Lake Elsinore Storm. End TB – 2018 World Tuberculosis Day (3/22/2018)

World Tuberculosis (TB) day is celebrated annually on March 24, providing the opportunity to raise awareness about TB disease and support worldwide TB-control efforts. While great progress has been made to control and cure TB, people still become ill and die from this disease in the United States. In 2017, California reported a total of 2,056 cases of active TB and 54 of those were in San Bernardino County. View the news release.

Health Officer urges county residents to get the flu shot (1/8/2018)

The Public Health Officer is strongly encouraging County residents to get the flu shot. Initial influenza reports have sharply increased nearly 300% in the last week, going from 38 reports to 150 reports. Dead crow tests positive for West Nile Virus in Yucaipa (8/18/2017)

A dead crow collected in the city of Yucaipa has tested positive for West Nile Virus. This is the first dead bird that has tested positive for West Nile Virus in 2017 in the Yucaipa area. When a dead bird tests positive for West Nile Virus it means people are at a higher risk of being infected with the disease if bitten by a mosquito. View the News Release.

Positive indicators for West Nile Virus found across the county (7/25/2017)

Seven chickens from sentinel flocks in Fontana and San Bernardino, combined, have tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). Although chickens are not harmed by this virus, it shows the mosquito populations in the area are infected with the virus. This increases the public’s risk of being infected with West Nile Virus. In addition, a group of 14 mosquitoes collected in Fontana, Rialto, and Redlands tested positive for the virus. These are the first chickens and mosquitoes that tested positive in 2017 within the area served by the Division of Environmental Health Services Mosquito and Vector Control Program (MVCP). MVCP is taking steps to eliminate mosquito breeding hazards. View the News Release.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) Factsheet (6/1/2017)

Did you know that the disease coccidioidomycosis is endemic (native and common) in the southwestern United States, including southern California? Coccidioidomycosis, is a lung disease that results from infection with Coccidioides, a fungus which lives in dirt. It is also known as Valley Fever, cocci, California fever, desert rheumatism, and San Joaquin Valley Fever. Symptoms include fever, cough, headache, rash, muscle aches, or joint pain. In severe cases, patients develop pneumonia or meningitis, sometimes resulting in death.  View the Fact Sheet.

Mega Pet Adoption Event Returns June 10 and 11 (5/24/2017)

More than 200 dogs and cats will be available for adoption at the annual Mega Pet Adoption event at Yucaipa Community Park on Saturday, June 10 and Sunday June 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Animal shelters and rescue groups from throughout the county will have cats and dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds available for adoption at the two day event. First confirmed flu-related death in San Bernardino County (1/26/2017)

The Department of Public Health has confirmed a child with underlying medical conditions has become the first flu-related death for San Bernardino County. This flu season has seen widespread influenza activity that is more severe than last year. To increase awareness of childhood lead poisoning prevention, the Department of Public Health’s Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPP), is participating in National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) October 23-29. The program educates families and community members about ways to prevent lead poisoning and the importance of testing children for lead. Positive indicators for West Nile Virus reported in Colton and Upland (8/16/2016)

The Division of Environmental Health Service’s Mosquito and Vector Control Program (MVCP) has reported multiple positive indicators for West Nile Virus (WNV) in San Bernardino County. MVCP has sentinel chicken flocks placed in various locations throughout San Bernardino County to detect WNV. If any sentinel chickens test positive for WNV, it means that the mosquito population in these areas are infected, increasing the possible risk of the public being infected. The Saint Louis Encephalitis Virus (SLEV) has been detected in a flock of chickens in Needles– the first positive indicator for the virus in San Bernardino County since 1997. View the Press Release.

Two cases of West Nile Virus confirmed in the County (8/3/2016)

Two human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) have been confirmed in San Bernardino County as of August 3. These are the first confirmed human cases within the County this year. The two cases are both elderly males who are now under medical care. The California Department of Public Health has reported increased West Nile virus activity across the state. Dr. Maxwell Ohikhuare Health Officer for San Bernardino County has issued another excessive heat warning for high temperatures today and through this coming weekend. Temperatures are expected to be above 105°F for the Inland Valley areas and up to 110°F for the high deserts. The mountain areas below 6000 feet will see temperatures up to 102°F. Free Rapid HIV Testing (6/24/2016)

In observance of National HIV Testing Day, Public Health will be providing free rapid HIV testing with resources, educational information, and incentive items at two mobile locations on Monday, June 27. The mobile testing unit (MTU) will be at the corner of Rialto Avenue and E Street in San Bernardino from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The MTU will also be at Hamburger Mary’s Restaurant at 3550 E. Porsche Way, in Ontario from 8 to 11p.m. The rapid test involves a simple oral swab which produces results within 20 to 40 minutes. Invasive Mosquito Found in San Bernardino County (6/21/2016)

On June 16, 2016, the Division of Environmental Health Services (DEHS), Mosquito and Vector Control Program (MVCP) discovered an Aedes aegypti (the yellow fever mosquito) in the city of Colton. This specimen was confirmed by the state Department of Public Health. In October 2015, an Aedes aegypti was found in the city of Colton. To date these are the only two Aedes aegypti found in the MVCP area. View the press release.

County issues an Excessive Heat Warning (6/16/2016)

County of San Bernardino Health Officer Dr. Maxwell Ohikhuare has issued an excessive heat warning for extreme high temperatures expected for the inland and desert regions this coming weekend and into the following week. Temperatures above 105°F will be seen from Sunday to Tuesday, and into Wednesday for the desert regions. Childhood Lead Poisoning is preventable. Testing children can prevent future learning and behavioral problems caused by lead poisoning. The Department of Public Health Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program’s theme for this year is “Prevent Childhood Lead Poisoning. Learn Where Lead Can Be”. Invasive mosquitoes found in San Bernardino County (10/20/2015)

On Oct. 15, 2015, the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, Division of Environmental Health Services (DEHS), Mosquito and Vector Control Program (MVCP) discovered Aedes albopictus (the Asian tiger mosquito) in the city of Upland, and Aedes aegypti (the yellow fever mosquito) in the city of Colton. First death from West Nile Virus confirmed (8/17/2015)

San Bernardino County Department of Public Health has confirmed the first death from West Nile Virus (WNV) in 2015. A total of five WNV cases have been confirmed within the County this year; the first death occurred in a previously reported case. San Bernardino County reported eight confirmed WNV cases at this time in 2014 with no deaths. Throughout the state, there are 36 confirmed WNV cases so far this year. First human cases of West Nile Virus confirmed (8/6/2015)

Two human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) have been confirmed in San Bernardino County. These are the first confirmed human cases within the County this year. At this time last year, the County had a total of two confirmed cases of WNV. Smoke Advisory (6/19/2015)

A wildfire is currently burning in the San Bernardino National Forest east of Camp De Benneville Pines, near Barton Flats, south of Big Bear Lake. The fire, called the Lake Fire, was last reported to have burned 11,000 acres with 10 percent containment. View the News Release.

Ticks Test Positive for Lyme Disease Bacteria (4/24/2015)

The Division of Environmental Health Services’ (DEHS) Mosquito and Vector Control Program (MVCP) confirmed that two adult western black-legged ticks collected on January 29, 2015, tested positive for a bacteria that may cause Lyme disease in humans. MVCP routinely checks for the presence of this bacteria in local ticks within the County. The ticks were collected about 4 miles north of Yucaipa along Highway 38 on a hiking trail. This marks the first finding of the bacteria during a tick survey in San Bernardino County since 1991. The MVCP will continue to survey this and other areas to assess Lyme disease risk to San Bernardino County residents and visitors. View the News Release.

January 9, 2015: Measles has been confirmed in eight California residents and two Utah residents as of January 9, 2015; all visited Disneyland or Disney California Adventure Park between December 15 and December 20, 2014. In California, the confirmed cases reside in six local health jurisdictions (Alameda, Orange, Pasadena, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego) and range in age from 8 months to 21 years. This Influenza season is expected to be severe. Those at higher risk of severe influenza who show flu symptoms should contact their medical provider immediately in order to get the most effective treatment.
