Give BIG returns to assist charities in San Bernardino County
The Community Foundation is pleased to announce the return of Give BIG San Bernardino County, an exciting 24-hour event to increase philanthropy in San Bernardino County through online giving.
Give BIG San Bernardino County will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016 from midnight through Dec. 1.
The 24-hour online event is designed to generate funding for nonprofits in the county while building a culture of philanthropy and giving throughout the community.
“We look forward to bringing our great community together once again on November 29,” said Dr. Jonathan Lorenzo Yorba, President and CEO of The Community Foundation. “Our goal is to build on the success of last year’s campaign while continuing to raise awareness of the important work of nonprofits serving our local communities.”
Creating a culture of philanthropy is a major priority in San Bernardino County and the Inland Empire, where poverty rates rank among the highest in the nation. According to the Southern California Association of Governments, 19 percent of Inland Empire residents – and 26 percent of children – live below the poverty line. Compounding this challenge is a rapidly growing population. Currently home to more than 2 million people, San Bernardino County is projected to be among the fastest growing regions in the United States.
Thanks to funding and support from the County of San Bernardino Board of Supervisors and the contributions of generous sponsors, Give Big San Bernardino County is providing valuable training to nonprofits in the use of social media, cultivating relationships with donors, developing a communications plan, and raising muchneeded funds from online donors. These online donations provide critical funding to help nonprofits in San Bernardino County not only address poverty but also other challenges the county residents face in the areas of education, health, the environment, public safety, family and youth services. Give BIG San Bernardino County also provides donors with an online giving platform to improve the quality of life for all through recreation, the arts, and more.

Inland Empire Awakens on May the Fourth
The San Bernardino County Museum and the Riverside Art Museum are jointly hosting an early morning event, “May the 4th: the Inland Empire Awakens,” to celebrate International Star Wars Day. This dance sunriser takes place at both locations on Wednesday, May 4, 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. Free to the public, the event will feature breakfast treats, non-alcoholic beverages, and dance music by local disc jockeys DJEturnal at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands, and DJ Hyphen-Select of Mental Physix at the Riverside Art Museum. “These early morning dance events are a trend in some major cities to encourage community and health through dance, which results in an alert, happy and productive day.” said Museum Director Melissa Russo. “By joining with Riverside Art Museum we offer our region a social and exhilarating opportunity to express oneself in music and movement, and what better date than Star Wars Day to introduce this activity to our region.”
May the 4th is informally recognized as Star Wars Day, as the date provides an easy pun, first coined in 1979, on the Star Wars phrase “May the Force be with you.” Dancers are encouraged to come to either museum before school or class dressed in work or school clothes, in workout clothes, or even in full Star Wars regalia.

Celebrate Mother’s Day at the County Museum
Bring Mom to the San Bernardino County Museum on Mother’s Day, May 8, and create a special gift for her during a Family Fun Sunday. Craft activities, scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m., are included with general museum admission.
Special exhibits open during the day include “Mysteries at the Museum,” “California Bling,” and “Turn Left at the Rockies.” Families will also enjoy sharing memories on the Remembering Ramps and disappearing into the walls as they learn about how animals disguise themselves in nature. Fossils, birds, mammals, and prehistoric and historic artifacts are also on exhibit. The Exploration Station live animal gallery will also be open from 1 to 4 p.m.

San Bernardino County has made it a priority to promote and protect homeownership. As part of that effort, the County Department of Community Development and Housing encourages interested county residents to attend a free 
housing expo and town hall meeting on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Fair Housing Council of Riverside, 3933 Mission Inn Ave. in Riverside.
HUD-approved housing counselors, lenders and real estate agents will be on-hand to assist those looking to buy their first home or make a new start after a foreclosure, short sale, or bankruptcy. The event will include valuable information about down payment assistance, real estate fraud, foreclosure prevention, mortgage modification, fair housing, and more.

Family fun marks opening of Apple Valley library space April 30
Face painting, a balloon artist, crafts and a children’s performer will greet guests at the opening of temporary library space at the Newton T. Bass Branch Library in Apple Valley on Saturday, April 30.
The event begins at 10:30 a.m. with a special kickoff and dedication with guest speakers, a bag giveaway and light refreshments. Every guest who checks out 15 items from the library during the event becomes eligible for a prize drawing at 1 p.m.
Regular library services are returning to the Apple Valley civic center in 5,000 square feet of modular units in the parking lot of the existing library building at 14901 Dale Evans Parkway in Apple Valley. The library closed last year due to extensive structural issues and the temporary library will operate until the building is repaired.
“I encourage families to come out and enjoy the library again,” said First District Supervisor Robert Lovingood. “I’m pleased we are able to open this library while we work to repair the roof on the existing building.”
The library building is undergoing extensive repairs to replace the roof and the support structure, which turned out to be insufficient to support the original roof. Identifying the problem and determining how to address it has required extensive study and deliberation by engineers and insurers, as well as design work. The project has encountered a series of unforeseen challenges, but the County is committed to providing Apple Valley library patrons with a quality facility as soon as possible. The County will keep the community updated on the project.
In the temporary space, full library services will be available including 25 public access computers, printing availability and free Wi-Fi.
In addition, the Summer Reading Program kicks off on Monday June 6 and continues through Saturday July 30. This year’s theme is super heroes and rewards for both kids and adults are available depending on the number of books, pages and minutes of reading completed this summer. The Summer Reading Program also celebrates and supports the Countywide Vision’s literacy campaign, Vision2Read, which seeks to focus attention on the importance of reading, highlight literacy-related programs and services and connect people to literacy resources and volunteer opportunities.
A countywide challenge is also available to children and teenagers to reach certain reading goals and they will be entered into a drawing to win prizes.

Needlework demonstration at the County Museum
Members of the Inland Empire Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America will demonstrate and display embroidery and needlepoint techniques on Sunday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the San Bernardino County Museum. The local Embroiderers Guild chapter has met at the museum monthly since the 1990s to inspire interest in the craft and to introduce it to the next generation.
“The Museum has historic textiles in both its history and its anthropology collections,” said Jennifer Dickerson, the museum’s curator of history. “Needlework, whether for decorative or practical purposes, was an essential skill in the past for creating and maintaining clothing and household goods. By demonstrating the actual making of these pieces, the Embroiders Guild helps connect our collection to the techniques that went into their production.”
