You Said What?! 20 Things Never to Say to an LGBTQ+ Person – And Why
April 14 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
Intended Audience: DBH and contract agency staff
When interacting with someone from another culture, we are all concerned we might say the wrong thing. At the same time, we have questions. This training takes a look at the LGBTQ+ culture. It will review the diagram of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression. It will discuss 20 things that should not be said, and investigate why they should not be said. At the same time, it will attempt to answer questions about this culture. At the end, there will be an exploration of confidential questions, so that people get the answers to questions that they might not feel comfortable asking directly.
By the end of this course, attendees will be able to:
- Explain the differences between Sex Assigned at Birth, Gender Identity, and Sexual Orientation.
- Identify the ages at which Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation develop.
- Understand why certain questions can be found to be offensive.
- Identify what to do when they make a mistake, in order to maintain rapport.
Attending this training in its entirety fulfills 1 hour of DBH’s annual Cultural Competency training requirement for all staff.
Note: All participants attending this training must be in accordance with DBH Dress Code Policy. Participants must also attend the entire class session, sign in and sign out on the attendance sheet to receive course credit, including continuing education (CE) credit. No partial credit will be awarded. Certificates will be available via Relias within 10 business days. Breaks and lunches are not eligible for CE credit. There is no charge for CEs.
