The Nutrition Program is comprised of a team of professional Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN) and Health Education Specialists (HES) that operates as an integral component of the Department of Public Health to deliver the most current and accurate nutrition and health information to County residents.
What We Do
As part of the statewide Champions for Change effort, we focus on preventing nutrition and activity-related chronic diseases and improving food security among low-income residents by:
- Providing information and education to promote food resource management, healthy eating, and a physically active lifestyle, and
- Creating supportive food and activity environments in collaboration with community partners in order to make healthy choices easier where people eat, live, learn, work, play, shop and worship.
Other services provided by RDN and HES staff include:
- Nutrition assessments, education and follow-up for participants in the Child Health & Disability Prevention (CHDP) Program, Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPP), and persons treated at the Ontario, San Bernardino, Hesperia and Adelanto Health Centers,
- Technical expertise and quality assurance for the Department of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) Senior Nutrition Program, and
- Participation in state mandated inspections of local correctional facilities.
Who We Serve
With the assistance of subcontractors and trained extenders (such as teachers and Community Health Leaders), we serve a large portion of residents that are low-income or eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)/CalFresh across the County.
Why We Do It
- In San Bernardino County, 72% of adults 18 year or older are overweight or obese compared to 62.5% of adults across the state.
- Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.
- Healthy eating and physical activity are the building blocks for healthy bodies and greater consumption of fruits and vegetables and regular physical activity are associated with a reduced risk of obesity-related diseases, as well as improved weight management.
Champions For Change Initiatives
County Nutrition Action Partnership (CNAP)
A partnership of federally funded and unfunded community organizations that collaborates to increase access to healthy foods, promote physical activity, address food insecurity, prevent obesity, and deliver consistent nutrition messages across programs targeting low-income residents.
Communities of Excellence in Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention (CX3)
A community planning framework designed to look at food and nutrition in its broadest sense within communities using real-world data that accurately conveys neighborhood conditions. Activated and engaged residents work with Public Health to improve the food and physical activity environments where they live, work and play.
Peer to Peer Education
An education model utilizing trained Community Health Leaders to disseminate nutrition education and obesity prevention information to friends, family, and those in their cohort. Classes are tailored to the social and cultural characteristics of the participants and include health promotion strategies that impact knowledge, attitudes, and practices on a community level.
An enterprise reaching low-income residents in familiar church environments to engage pastoral staff, church leadership and members in church-wide educational activities and health promotion events. Sites work with Public Health to implement environmental supports for healthy eating and physical activity in the church setting.
Preschool/Early Child Care Education
Outreach focused on children in the 0 to 5 age group, their families and adult caregivers in center-based, home-based or public school settings to help establish healthy habits and expose children to a variety of healthy foods at an early age. Sites work with Public Health to create healthy and active early care and education environments supported by healthy site policies and systems.
A partnership with qualifying school, afterschool and youth engagement sites to reach children and youth in the 6 to 17 age group and their parents in order to increase nutrition education, physical activity opportunities and wellness policy expansion that increase access and consumption of healthy food and beverages at each site.
A partnership with qualifying neighborhood stores (supermarkets, grocery stores and/or independent grocers) to help increase the purchase of fruits and vegetables among low-income residents through nutrition education materials, food and beverage demonstrations, store tours, and point of purchase marketing strategies. Retailers are provided with a variety of tools, resources, and outreach activities to inspire healthy change among consumers.
