INCIDENT: Major Injury Traffic Collison

LOCATION: Hwy 18/East of Tao Road, Apple Valley

VICTIM: 48-year-old Hispanic female

SUMMARY:
On June 28, 2018, at 12:52pm, sheriff’s dispatch received multiple calls of a single vehicle rollover accident. The callers stated a Ford Explorer SUV had rolled over on Highway 18, east of Tao Road. The adult female driver was ejected from the vehicle and sustained major injuries. The injured female was unresponsive and bystanders stopped to render aid. Units from the Apple Valley Fire Protection District arrived and took over life saving efforts. The driver was transported to St. Mary Hospital and then airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Due to the severity of the accident, Highway 18 was closed in both directions. Westbond lanes were reopened after 15 minutes; however, eastbound lanes remained closed for 45 minutes. Deputies from the Apple Valley Police Department-Traffic Division responded and investigated the collision. The preliminary findings indicate the vehicle was eastbound on Highway 18, left the roadway and entered the center divider. The driver attempted to correct the vehicle’s direction, reentered the eastbound lanes and overturned the vehicle. Evidence indicated the driver may have been using a cellular telephone while operating a motor vehicle. It also appears the driver was not wearing a seat belt, which contributed to her being ejected from the vehicle.

The Apple Valley Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind drivers to wear their seatbelts and the dangers of distracted driving. We would also like to commend the citizens who stopped to render aid and those who waited patiently and followed the directions of first responders.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact the Apple Valley Police Department, Deputy Bechtol at (760)240-7400.
