INCIDENT: Search and Rescue
LOCATION: Mount Baldy
VICTIM(S): Camereon Cormanervin, 25-year-old resident of Orange
William Theriault, 24-year-old, resident of Orange
SUMMARY: Camereon Cormanervin and William Theriault drove to the Manker Flats area of Mount Baldy for a day hike. They left the Manker Flats area and started their hike to the summit of Mount Baldy by way of the Devil’s Backbone trail. Prior to them arriving at the summit, they became cold and tired because of the extreme weather conditions and low temperatures. They stopped and set up their tent to rest and warm up.
While they were in the tent, Cormanervin told Theriault he was experiencing severe back pain, then appeared to slip in and out of consciousness. Theriault heard someone outside the tent identify himself as a Search and Rescue member. He stepped out of the tent and contacted the Search and Rescue Team members as they were hiking back down the mountain from a prior Search and Rescue mission. Theriault informed them of Cormanervin’s medical condition and requested assistance.
The Search and Rescue team members evaluated Cormanervin and gave him dry clothing, food, and hot chocolate. With the help of the team members, Cormanervin was safely escorted back down the mountain where he was provided medical attention and released a short time later.
The West Valley Search & Rescue team and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind all hikers to have the appropriate clothing, food, water, gear, and the 10 essentials when hiking in the wilderness.
