LOCATION: Shadow Moutain / Highway 395

VICTIM(S): Fredrick Clayton, 42 year old male of Helendale
Franklin Shearer, 53 year old male of Hesperia

SUMMARY: On Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at approximately 3:30 pm, the victims, Clayton and Shearer, were driving west on Shadow Mountain Rd from Highway 395. The subjects made a wrong turn and their vehicle became stuck in the sand. Clayton began walking to try and find help. After he became exhausted and dehydrated, called 911 for assistance on his mobile phone.

Sheriff’s patrol helicopter 40king7, with a crew of Pilot Deputy Jon Roberg and Tactical Flight Officer Deputy Cody Korkotsakis, were dispatched to the area of Shadow Mountain/Highway 395. The crew was able to talk to Clayton on the phone, and he described his location. With that description, the crew was able to locate Clayton on a dirt road, southeast of Edwards Air Force Base. Clayton was suffering from dehydration and collapsed on the roadway once he saw the helicopter. The crew was able to off-site land and provided Clayton with first aid. Clayton was brought onto the helicopter and was able to assist the flight crew with the location of Shearer, who was a few miles east on the same dirt road. The crew was able to off-site land and pick up Shearer. Both victims were transported to Shadow Mountain Rd/Highway 395 and turned over to paramedics for further treatment.
