The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, in partnership with California State University of San Bernardino and California Baptist University, provides evidence-based interventions for inmates to improve family relations, mitigate factors leading to self-destructive life patterns, reduce recidivism, and promote overall healthy functioning of individuals involved with the criminal justice system.  Graduate student interns implement the Parental Intervention Project (PIP) through Trauma Recovery and Family Relations classes, case management, clinical work, and other targeted interventions.

Inmates who have completed the mandated number of class hours are eligible to apply for the TALK (Teaching and Loving Kids) classes, where parenting skills learned in class are put into practice during supervised, hands-on weekly contact visits with their children.  Family reunification efforts like TALK can be the inspiration some parents need to change their lifestyle choices and lower recidivism, as well as reducing the cycle of generational incarceration.
