INCIDENT: Vicious Animal Attack ***UPDATE***

LOCATION: 59000 Block of Sunflower Drive, Joshua Tree

VICTIM: Lana Bergman, a 70-year-old resident of Joshua Tree

SUMMARY: Update January 23, 2019

Through investigation, deputies have learned that the victim, Lana Bergman, lived on the property, with a male friend. The friend allowed a family, that was living in a bus with four Pitbull dogs to stay at the residence for two weeks before the attack on the victim. The dogs were considered family pets. On Wednesday, January 16th, the victim was home alone when the dogs mauled her. The victim succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

The Morongo Basin Station has received multiple tips regarding the owners of the dogs possibly being wanted from the State of Oregon. The information was investigated and found not to be accurate. The San Bernardino County Children and Family Services responded to the residence and determined the children to be healthy and allowed to stay with their parents.

The dogs are still in the custody of the San Bernardino Animal Care. Any information regarding the dogs, please contact Animal Care.

The investigation is ongoing. Upon completion, the report will be forwarded to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for the recommendation of criminal charges.
