Summary

On Monday, November 21, 2016 at 4:53 p.m., investigators from the Chino Hills and Rancho Cucamonga Sheriff Stations served a search warrant at the Verizon Store in the city of Rancho Cucamonga pursuant to a fraud investigation involving store employees. The Verizon store is located at 7825 Monticello Avenue and is within the Victoria Gardens Shopping Center.

The investigation began on September 27, 2016 when Chino Hills patrol deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance involving Daniel Henry Mitchell. Upon contact, and during a search of Mitchell’s vehicle, deputies located evidence of identity theft which included blank credit cards, credit card reader/writer, social security numbers, credit reports, and customer purchase receipts from the Victoria Gardens Verizon store.

Detectives conducted an extensive investigation and determined Mitchell was running a large criminal conspiracy involving multiple suspects, including Verizon store employees. Investigators located over 50 identified and potential victims residing throughout the United States.

During the search warrant, investigators interviewed multiple Verizon employees who admitted involvement in setting up fraudulent accounts. On Monday, November 21, 2016, the Verizon store manager, Brandon Gaynor, was arrested and booked at West Valley Detention Center for Identity Theft. Gaynor was released from custody after posting bail.
Mitchell is currently in-custody within the Los Angeles County Jail system on a No-Bail warrant for PC484(e) – Possession of Stolen Credit Cards on an unrelated case.

Verizon Corporate Security is actively working with law enforcement and taking the appropriate administrative actions for all associated employees.
