INCIDENT: Night Hoist Rescue of Hiker on My Baldy

LOCATION: San Antonio Falls, Mt Baldy

VICTIM(S): Elizabeth Pendleton, age 34 of Santee

Summary

On November 6, 2016, at approximately 4:46 p.m., Sheriff’s patrol helicopter 40 KING 5, crewed by Pilot Deputy Doug Brimmer and Flight Officer Larry Scott, were dispatched to an injured hiker on Mt. Baldy. The hiker, later identified as Elizabeth Pendleton, was hiking down from the San Antonio Falls in the area of Mt Baldy and fell, suffering non-life threatening injuries.

The crew of 40K5 responded to the area to search for Pendleton and located her. Sheriff’s rescue helicopter Air Rescue 6 was requested to respond, crewed by Pilot Cpl. Jon Anderson, Crew Chief Deputy Steve Miller, and volunteer medic Melony Munns, to perform a hoist rescue. Due to the time of the day, and the loss of sunlight, rescue crews determined a hoist rescue using night goggles was necessary. Patrol helicopter 40 King 1, crewed by Deputy Pilot Jon Roberg and Deputy TFO Paul Kowalski, was called to the scene to perform a hoist using night vision goggles.

Using AR306’s medic, the crew on 40K1 flew to the falls and lowered the medic to Pendleton. The medic put Pendleton into a Screamer Suit Rescue Harness, and she was hoisted up into the helicopter. She was flown to a nearby area where fire personnel was waiting to render medical aid.
