CRIME: Felony DUI / Felony Hit and Run

LOCATION:Etiwanda Avenue / 4th Street, Rancho Cucamonga

SUSPECT: Jose Angel Martinez, a 41-year-old resident of Fontana, driving a black, Chevrolet
Silverado

Summary

On Sunday, March 20, 2016, in the early morning hours, Martinez arrived at Fontana Speedway for a NASCAR race and started drinking alcohol. At about 11:10 a.m., Martinez returned to his vehicle (Chevrolet) and drove out of the parking lot onto Napa toward Etiwanda. At the same time, the north sidewalk of Napa was congested with pedestrians walking east into the raceway. Martinez veered off the roadway onto the north sidewalk and struck two pedestrians. Martinez failed to stop and continued west where he turned left on Napa and continued south. He continued south and approached 4th Street where vehicles were stopped for a red light in the southbound lanes. Martinez rear-ended a vehicle causing a chain reaction collision. Deputy Rusk was conducting traffic control at this intersection and witnessed the collision. Martinez reversed away from the collision scene and started to turn the Chevrolet around to flee. Deputy Rusk ran to his patrol unit and activated his lights and siren. Martinez fled north in the southbound lanes in excess of 80mph with Deputy Rusk in pursuit until Martinez tried to enter the northbound number one lane which was congested with heavy traffic. Martinez refused verbal commands to get out of his vehicle and was removed by deputies. He was found to be intoxicated. CHP conducted the collision investigation for the pedestrians on Napa, and Rancho Cucamonga units are investigating the collision on Etiwanda and 4th. Both pedestrians suffered broken bones, and one is currently in ICU being treated for major internal bleeding. All parties at the Rancho collision were treated and transported to local hospitals with non-life threating injuries. Martinez was booked at WVDC after a jail check.
