INCIDENT: Search Warrant – Cultivation of Marijuana / Sales of Marijuana / Felon in Possession of Firearm / Ammunition
LOCATION: 2235 W. Kern Street, San Bernardino
SUSPECT: Luis Alfonso Quezada, age 33, of San Bernardino
Investigators from the Sheriff’s Marijuana Enforcement Team (MET) assisted deputies from the Sheriff’s Central Station during the service of a search warrant at 2235 W. Kern Street in San Bernardino. The illegal marijuana grow operation was discovered when deputies from the Central Station responded to a report of gunshots heard in the area. Initial reports from citizens were that there were 20 to 40 gunshots heard. Deputies arrived to investigate and found evidence that unidentified suspect(s) fired firearms in front of the location. The suspect was found inside a rear house on the large property at the location. He was in possession of a semi-automatic handgun and an illegal assault rifle at the time. Deputies located over 200 marijuana plants growing in the rear yard while searching the property for any other suspects or victims from the shooting.
Deputies secured the scene and obtained a search warrant to continue their investigation. It was later determined that Quezada was staying in the rear house on the property. He was growing the marijuana plants and selling marijuana it to unknown individuals. At this time, it is unknown if he was involved in the initial shooting that took place at the location. MET took over the narcotic investigation.
Additionally, the evidence gathered during the investigation suggests that the suspect was not in compliance with California medical marijuana laws and local ordinances. The County of San Bernardino has an ordinance prohibiting marijuana dispensaries, mobile marijuana dispensaries, delivery services, and outdoor cultivation of marijuana within the unincorporated areas of the county.
At the conclusion of the criminal investigation the suspect will be charged with the Cultivation of Marijuana, Sales of Marijuana and being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office will review the case and decide on what, if any, criminal charges will be filed against the suspect. The property owner may face civil and/or criminal charges at a later date.
Quezada was initially booked into the Central Detention Center for the aforementioned charges, but was released to the custody of U.S. Department of Homeland Security for a pending criminal charge in their jurisdiction.
