INCIDENT: Penal Code 451 – Arson LOCATION:74000 block Alta Loma Dr, 29 Palms SUSPECT(S): Steven Mayo, 35 years, Desert Hot Springs VICTIM(S):Jennifer Spangler, 29 Palms


On December 29, 2015, at approximately 3:45 a.m., deputies from the Morongo Basin Station responded to the 74000 block of Alta Loma Drive in 29 Palms for a structure fire. Residents of the house were able to exit the house safely prior to sheriff’s deputies arriving.


The 29 Palms Fire Department responded to the location and extinguished the fire which had engulfed a boat and a detached garage. A Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb detective and a Morongo Basin Station detective responded to take over the investigation. The investigation revealed that Jennifer Spangler lived at the location with her father and her boyfriend, Steven Mayo, who had been visiting. An argument ensued between Spangler and Mayo, and Mayo left the location. A short time later Spangler noticed the detached garage was on fire and exited the residence safely with her father. Deputies began looking for Mayo’s vehicle which was later located and stopped.    Through investigation, evidence led detectives to Mayo for starting the fire. Mayo was arrested for Penal Code 451- Arson and a probation violation. Mayo was booked into the Morongo Basin jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.
