SUSPECT(S): 11-year-old, Male – 29 Palms

Summary

On February 24, 2016, at 12:47 p.m., staff members of the Bright Futures Academy in 29 Palms, called to report a juvenile at the location was suspected of starting a fire inside a restroom. Deputies arrived on scene and were provided with the following information. An 11-year-old male asked to use the restroom. Per protocol, a staff member escorted the juvenile to the restroom, unlocked the door, conducted a visual inspection to ensure the room was empty, and then let the juvenile into the restroom. A couple of minutes after the juvenile exited, a staff member smelled smoke coming from the restroom. The staff member entered the restroom and found a roll of toilet paper, inside a metal toilet paper dispenser, had been set on fire. Staff members used water to extinguish the fire. Upon further examination, staff members located burn marks on two of the ceiling tiles. It appears the juvenile attempted to set the ceiling tiles on fire, but was unsuccessful. The juvenile was contacted and found to be in possession of a lighter. Deputies cited the juvenile for arson, a felony, and will submit a report to the Juvenile District Attorney. The juvenile was removed from the school’s campus.
