DATE/TIME OF RELEASE: August 9, 2016 / 2:00 pm

INCIDENT: Accidental Animal Death

LOCATION: Pearl Rd / Camp Rock Road & Rabbit Springs Road, Lucerne Valley

On Tuesday August 2, 2016 at 9:00 pm, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department dispatch received a call regarding a neighbor dispute over pit bulls in the 37200 block of Pearl Road in Lucerne Valley.

Deputy Michael Otey responded to the residence and learned that 2 pit bulls had wandered into the residents yard several days earlier. The pit bulls attacked the residents dog, causing injury that required treatment by a veterinarian. Due to this incident the resident asked a neighbor to take the 2 pit bulls so they would not have to be put down.

The neighbor agreed to take the dogs and they roamed free on his property until they were found deceased. The dogs were buried on this person’s property for disposal. It is believed that the dogs may have eaten rat poison that was on the property as the property owner has been having problems with rodents and had rat poison out.

The subject whose property the dogs had come onto saw a flyer regarding the dogs at a local market and contacted the owner of the dogs who threatened him. The subject who had buried the dogs after they died was in fear of the owner so he dug up the dogs and drug their carcasses off his property using chains.

On Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at 8:00 pm a citizen called to report the deceased dogs. Deputy Sean Byrne attempted to contact the owner of the pit bulls however the owner was uncooperative with Deputy Byrne and refused to claim his dogs. The dogs were then picked up by County Animal Control.

Rural Crimes Task Force deputies have been asked to assist with the investigation of this case and the investigation is on-going.
