San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department

Press Release

DATE/TIME OF RELEASE: July 11, 2016 at 4:00pm

On Saturday, July 9, 2016, at 7:45pm, deputies from the Victor Valley Station received a 911 call from a distraught female stating her husband, Jaime Valazqueza, went OHV riding on a Gray Yamaha Quad in the area of the El Mirage Dry Lake Bed and had not returned. She stated she had not seen him in 4-5 hours and was able to provide deputies with what he was last seen wearing. She also told deputies he had no food or water with him, no helmet, little OHV experience and had never rode in the area before. Mr. Valazqueza was listed as a critical missing adult and deputies, with the assistance of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Departments Aviation Division, continued searching for him.

On Sunday, July 10, 2016, at 5:00am, Search and Rescue members, under the direction of Search and Rescue Coordinator Deputy Mark Lewis, set up a Command Post on Oasis Road south of El Mirage Road near Black Mountain. The teams deployed at about 4:45 am to begin searching for Jaime Velasquez. At about 0613 hours, Velasquez was located suffering from a head injury and possible broken leg. Velasquez was carried back to the Command Post where paramedics were waiting. Velasquez was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster to be treated for his injuries.

This was a great team effort and we would like to thank all volunteers who responded to assist in locating Mr. Valazqueza. The Victor Valley Sheriff’s Stations Off Highway Vehicle Team would like to remind everyone to be prepared with adequate food and water and to ride in pairs, never venture out alone. Helmets are required by California State Law when operating an Off Highway Vehicle. For more information on legal riding areas or California State Laws regarding Off Highway Vehicles, please contact Sergeant Jeff Toll at 760-868-1006.
