DATE/TIME OF RELEASE: February 29, 2016 at 10:00 am INCIDENT: Theft by Caretaker, Make Fictitious Check SUSPECT(S): Steven Lawrence Griffiths, age 33, of Apple Valley SUMMARY: On Sunday, January 31, 2016, Deputy Thomas Gates of the Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of theft. Deputy Gates contacted the victim and learned an unknown suspect had created a check with the victim’s account information and had cashed the check, receiving $8,000. The victim suffered a traumatic brain injury and was living at a care facility in Apple Valley when the theft occurred. Deputy Gates began to investigate the incident, speaking with family members of the victim, employees at the care center and employees where the fictitious check had been cashed. Through his investigation Deputy Gates was led to Steven Griffiths as a suspect. Deputy Gates obtained evidence which led to the arrest of Steven Griffiths. Griffiths was booked at High Desert Detention Center and was subsequently released on his own recognizance. The case will be submitted to the Victorville District Attorney’s office for review and filing of charges.
