INCIDENT: Search and Rescue
LOCATION: San Antonio Falls, Mount Baldy
INVOLVED PARTIES: Joshua Barrera, 37-year-old resident of Compton and Michael Tran, 21-year-old resident of Placentia

Summary

On Saturday, December 30, 2017, at approximately 6:30 am, Michael Tran arrived in the Manker Flats area of Mount Baldy with his friend. They took the Ski Hut Trail to the summit of Mount Baldy. Later that same morning around 7:00 am, Joshua Barrera arrived at the Manker Flats area. He also hiked to the summit of Mount Baldy by way of the Ski Hut Trail.

Both men started descending the mountain using the Ski Hut Trail. Tran became tired and started experiencing some difficulties. He told his friend to continue the hike back to the car and he would meet him there. Shortly after Tran separated from his friend, he mistakenly left the trail and began following the stream down the mountain.

Barrera also mistakenly left the trail and started following the stream down the mountain. Eventually both Berrera and Tran encountered each other. They attempted to help each other down the mountain but both became stranded on two different rocky cliffs. Both hikers started yelling out to passing hikers, asking them for help. Several hikers left the area and made 911 calls. Air Rescue Helicopter was requested for a hoist rescue along with the West Valley Search and Rescue Team.

The Air Rescue Helicopter, and its crew hoisted Barrera off the cliff and flew him to a nearby landing zone where he was offered food and water. The crew was unable to hoist Tran off the cliff due to his location, so the Search and Rescue Team hiked down to and assist him.

The West Valley Search and Rescue Team, along with the assistance of the L.A. County Sheriff’s San Dimas Search and Rescue Team, hiked to Tran’s location. They assisted Tran off the cliff then escorted him back down the mountain, where he was offered food and water. Neither Barrera or Tran suffered any injuries. They were both transported back to their vehicles. Tran was also reunited with his friend.

The West Valley Search & Rescue team and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind all hikers to have the appropriate clothing, food, water, gear and the 10 essentials when hiking in the wilderness.
