Press Release

DATE/TIME:January 2, 2017/12:10 am

INCIDENT:Felony Evading LOCATION:Vineyard Avenue SUSPECT(S): Steven Brown 42-year-old male from Ontario

On January 2, 2017, at approximately 12:10 am, Deputy Smith of the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department was conducting DUI enforcement near the area of Vineyard Avenue. Smith observed a motorcycle with several vehicle code violations. Smith also noticed the rider matched the description of an armed robbery suspect from Yucaipa earlier in the day.

Smith attempted the traffic stop on the motorcycle, but the rider failed to stop and a pursuit ensued. The rider continued south on Vineyard Avenue at speeds more than 100mph. Due to the possibility that the rider was involved in an armed robbery pursuing units continued the pursuit. The pursuit traversed the cities of Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, and Upland. As the rider approached the 60 Freeway, he entered eastbound on the westbound off-ramp and accelerated away from pursuing units towards oncoming traffic. Deputies paralleled the rider in the eastbound lines and with the assistance of the Sheriff’s Aviation Division, illuminated the motorcycle for oncoming traffic to see. The Ontario Police Department assisted and created a traffic break on the westbound 60 Freeway to prevent oncoming traffic from traveling towards the suspect.   Shortly after entering the 60 Freeway, the motorcycle broke down. The rider stopped between the #3 and #4 lanes and immediately proned out on the ground until deputies arrived and took him into custody. The suspect was identified as Steven Brown. Brown was on felony probation for drug sales and was in possession of a controlled substance. He was booked into the West Valley Detention Center for Felony Evading and Possession of a Controlled Substance for Sale. His bail was set at $100,000. Deputies contacted the Yucaipa Sheriff Station, but detectives determined Brown was not the suspect involved in their armed robbery investigation.   Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department at (909) 477-2800.
