SUSPECT: Celso Reyes 23-year-old male from Ontario
Luis Gomez 26-year-old make from Ontario

Summary

On Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at approximately 10:00 am, Deputy Johnson of the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department was on patrol near the area of the Etiwanda Preserve. Johnson observed Celso Reyes and Luis Gomez in an area of the Etiwanda Preserve where a native sage plant is located and regularly picked illegally. The sage in this area is protected by the California Endangered Species Act.

Deputy Johnson determined both Reyes and Gomez were picking the protected sage illegally, in violation of California Penal Code 384 (a), a misdemeanor. Both Reyes and Gomez were arrested and booked into the West Valley Detention Center.

The Rancho Cucamonga Police Department has seen an increase in the picking and harvesting of sage in and around the Etiwanda Preserve. These actions jeopardize the continued existence of this species and affect the habitat growth of our protected areas. The Rancho Cucamonga Police Department will continue to work with the Etiwanda Preserve stakeholders to ensure this area is protected. For more information on California laws protecting native plants go to www.wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Plants/Laws.
