INCIDENT: PC 496D-Possession of a Stolen Vehicle / CVC 2800.2-Evade with Reckles Driving

LOCATION: Yucaipa Blvd. and Avenue E, Yucaipa

SUSPECTS: Alfonso Escamilla, age 23 a resident of San Jose
Abel Butler, age 28 a resident of Yucaipa


SUMMARY: On Tuesday, November 11, 2018, in response to information of a possible stolen vehicle in the area of Yucaipa Blvd and Avenue E, deputies initiated an area check and located the vehicle almost immediately.

As deputies approached the vehicle, a passenger ran from the car (near Avenue E and Dunlap) and the driver pulled away and led deputies on a short pursuit travelling at a high rate of speed. The driver briefly entered traffic on the eastbound 10, then exited at the Wildwood Rest Area and fled on foot.

Deputies pursued the suspect on foot through the rest area and across all lanes of the 10 freeway. The suspect jumped several walls and fences as deputies chased him. Deputies apprehended the suspect as he neared Calimesa Blvd. He was taken into custody without incident. One deputy sustained a minor injury during the arrest and the suspect was not injured.

The driver was identified as Alfonso Escamilla. The passenger who fled from the car was located by assisting deputies and detained without incident. He was identified as Abel Butler. Escamilla was booked on charges of possessing a stolen vehicle and felony evading and is being held on $100,000. bail. Butler was found to have multiple warrants for his arrest from San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Orange Counties. He was booked with bail set at $155,000.
