INCIDENT: Wild Animal Attack

LOCATION: 5900 Block of Avalon, Yucca Valley

On Monday, December 10, 2018, deputies from the Morongo Basin Sheriff Station and Fish and Wildlife Officers responded to a residential area in Yucca Valley reference a mountain lion who was killing a homeowner’s caged livestock. The lion had killed several animals before the deputies successfully chased the lion from the area that night.

On Tuesday, December 11, 2018, at about 10:38 p.m., the mountain lion returned to the same home in Yucca Valley. It broke through the roof of the livestock enclosure, and again attacked livestock. When deputies arrived, they found the mountain lion still inside the enclosure amongst several injured and deceased animals. Deputies made numerous unsuccessful attempts to chase the mountain lion from the enclosure, but the attack on the livestock continued.

The mountain lion posed an immediate and ongoing threat to the safety of the homeowner, his livestock as well as other people and animals living in the area. The deputies consulted with Fish and Wildlife Officers and determined the lion had to be put-down to end the attack and prevent further loss of life, as no other less intrusive/harmless means were immediately available. Fish and Wildlife Officers took possession of the lion’s remains.

This lion is believed to be responsible for several other animal attacks reported in this area over the past several months.
