SUMMARY: On Tuesday, January 28, 2020, parents and students of La Contenta Middle School, in Yucca Valley, participated in a protest, and school walkout, regarding school safety. Deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and officers from the California Highway Patrol were on scene to ensure the safety of all participants. The Sheriff’s Department would like to thank the parents for obeying all vehicle and penal codes, and for peacefully protesting on the sidewalk.

During the walkout, a 12-year-old student pulled the fire alarm, which triggered a fire evacuation, for all students, even those not participating in the walkout. After an investigation, deputies identified the responsible student. The student was cited for a violation of PC 148.4(a)(2), Trigger a False Fire Alarm. The student’s parent was cited for WI 660.5, Parental Responsibility.
