Geotechnical (Soils) Report–Building

A Geotechnical Report is typically required for most structures, including main residences, guest houses, additions, or detached accessory buildings. This report ensures the ground is suitable and safe for construction. Geotechnical reports that address a proposed project are considered preliminary reports whether they address development or construction plans. The appropriate scope of a preliminary geotechnical investigation is a function of the type of proposed land use or project, the soil or geologic conditions of the project site, and type of permit or approval sought. Types of preliminary geotechnical reports that may be submitted under the Geotechnical (Soil) Report category include:

• Soils Engineering Reports - provide recommendations and design parameters for things like foundations, retaining walls, and grading.


• Geologic Hazards Investigation Reports - typically required when there is a geologic hazard which may affect the life safety of the occupants. Such hazards may include landslides, liquefaction, debris flows, and earthquake faults.


• Geotechnical Investigation Reports – a comprehensive report that includes both a Soils Engineering and Geologic Hazards Investigation.


• Other types of focused geotechnical reports addressing a proposed project.
