Students learn signs of Veterans in crisis, use officer safety skills such as cover/concealment, utilize time/distance to prevent injury/harm, learn escalation versus de-escalation such as reducing the intensity of a crisis with Veterans. Learned skills such as utilizing paraphrasing and open-ended questioning techniques & gaining voluntary compliance, employing listening skills such as active listening, proactive questioning techniques such as paraphrasing, open-ended questions, & expressing empathy. Students learn persuasion to employ reason & articulation with Veteran’s in crisis, students learn Veteran disabilities like PTSD, TBI, MST etc. Students learn during scenario training how to communicate effectively with team members during a critical Incident by focusing on team dynamics to successfully resolve a crisis involving a Veteran. Students will physically demonstrate all the above tasks in practical application communication exercises, student course evaluations & testing.
