Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer member of the Sheriff’s Air Rescue Team.
Please read this page thoroughly as it contains important information about the team and the processing procedure. Interviews for new team members are held 1-2 times a year and are dependent on team needs. If you have any additional questions after reading this packet, please contact the Air Medic Team Coordinator or personnel officer at (909) 252-4100.
Training (Reserve and Citizen Volunteer)
New personnel who have not yet been sworn may not participate in field training. Recruits may participate on a limited basis for training held at the hangar. The Air Rescue Team will supply the needed equipment or supplies for hangar training.
- Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
- Be a legal resident of the United States
- Possess a high school diploma or GED
- Possess a valid California driver’s license or identification card
- Pass a Physical examination
- Pass an oral interview
- Pass a background investigation
- Successful completion of BSAR within one (1) year of hire
- Attend a department-authorized entry-level training program within twelve (12) months of assignment
- Meet and maintain all citizen volunteer department standards and training
- Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
- Be a legal resident of the United States
- Possess a high school diploma or GED
- Possess a valid California driver’s license or identification card
- Pass a physical agility test
- Pass a physical examination
- Pass an oral interview
- Pass a background investigation
- Attend a department-authorized entry-level training program within twelve (12) months of assignment
- Meet and maintain all citizen volunteer department standards and training
- Successful completion of BSAR within one (1) year of hire
- POST level certification III
- Complete monthly training program
- Complete the trimester firearms qualification
Probationary Period
After 18 months of satisfactory service, you will qualify to take the Wings exam. Before taking the Wings exam, all of your departmental/team requirements must be up to date (i.e. weapons qualification, team dues, etc.). Upon successful completion of the Wings Exam, you will be entitled to wear the gold wings on your name badge.
- State of California & eligible for ICEMA accreditation as a EMT-P
- Paramedic with a minimum of five (5) years full time experience with an ALS pre-hospital provider within the previous ten (10) years
- Current AHA certification in CPR-HCP and ACLS.
- Successful completion of an in-house orientation program
- Demonstrate practical and written aptitude in areas consistent with the major emphasis of care
- Endotracheal intubation training
- Successfully passing oral interview
Certification in any of the following is desirable but not required:
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS); EMT-Tactical (CONTOMS); Wilderness EMT (WENT)
Registered Nurse
- State of California license
- ICEMA Flight Nurse Certification
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in an emergency department within the previous three (3) years
- Current BLS and ACLS certification from the American Heart Association
- Minimum of 500 hours of critical care or emergency department experience per year
- Successful completion of an in-house orientation program
- Be able to show practical and written aptitude in areas consistent with the major emphasis of care
- Endotracheal intubation training
- Successfully passing oral interview
- ITLS or PHTLS or two (2) year prior paramedic experience
Certification in any of the following is desirable but not required:
Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC); Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC); Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS); Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN); Critical Care RN (CCRN); Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN); Certified Flight RN (CFRN); Pediatric Emergencies for Pre-Hospital Care (PEPP); Tactical Emergency Causality Care (TECC).
Physician
- MD/DO with current license in the State of California
- MD/DO with minimum of two (2) years of experience in critical care or an emergency department within the previous three (3) years

Background Investigation (Reserve and Citizen Volunteer)
Each recruit must submit to a background investigation consisting of checks within the:
- National Crime Information Center (NCIC)
- Criminal Name Index (CNI)
- California Law Enforcement Teletype System (CLETS)
- Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
- Other sources of information as required by the Sheriff’s Department
- No one may be sworn in until the Background Investigation is complete and has been approved
